Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Dinosaur Dig Volunteer Coordinator to lead and manage our community-based paleontological excavation projects. This paid management role is crucial for the success of our field operations, ensuring that volunteer teams are effectively recruited, trained, supervised, and supported throughout the excavation season. The successful candidate will be the primary point of contact for volunteers, managing all logistical aspects of dig sites, promoting safety, and fostering an inclusive and educational experience for all participants. This role combines hands-on field work with administrative responsibilities, requiring a passion for paleontology, excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to public engagement in scientific research.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit, screen, and onboard volunteers for various paleontological dig sites.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs for volunteers on excavation techniques, safety protocols, and fossil identification.
- Manage daily logistics for dig sites, including scheduling, equipment organization, and transportation coordination.
- Supervise and guide volunteer teams in the field, ensuring adherence to scientific protocols and safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours, site activities, and fossil finds.
- Act as the primary communication liaison between volunteers, scientific staff, and local landowners.
- Organize and lead educational outreach activities related to the digs.
- Assist with basic first aid and emergency response at dig sites.
- Contribute to the development of field manuals and best practices for volunteer-led excavations.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in volunteer coordination or project management.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to work effectively in outdoor, challenging field conditions.
- Basic knowledge of geology or paleontology concepts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar productivity tools.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate field vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Paleontology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
- Experience with field-based scientific research or archaeological/paleontological excavations.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Experience with GIS software or data management systems.
- Prior experience working in an academic or non-profit setting.
