Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Collections Technician with a focus on Vertebrate Paleontology to join our esteemed team. This stable, full-time position plays a crucial role in the preservation, organization, and accessibility of our invaluable fossil collections. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with paleontological specimen handling, preparation, and database management, contributing directly to ongoing research and educational initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, conserve, and stabilize vertebrate paleontological specimens using established museum techniques.
- Accurately catalog and database collection specimens, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
- Assist with the reorganization and rehousing of collections to improve storage conditions and access.
- Monitor environmental conditions within collection storage areas and report any deviations.
- Facilitate access to collections for researchers and educational programs, including retrieval and return of specimens.
- Maintain laboratory and collection equipment, ensuring a safe and organized working environment.
- Support field expeditions as needed, including specimen recovery and initial documentation.
- Adhere to all museum policies and best practices for collections care and safety.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in paleontological specimen preparation and conservation.
- Proficiency in collections database management systems (e.g., Specify, EMu).
- Strong understanding of vertebrate anatomy and paleontology.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical dexterity for handling delicate specimens and ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Experience with advanced imaging techniques (e.g., CT scanning, photogrammetry).
- Knowledge of fossil ethics and legal guidelines for specimen acquisition.
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment and protocols.
- Basic understanding of museum conservation principles.
