Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Bureau of Reclamation Paleo Monitor to join our team in El Paso, TX. This critical role involves monitoring ground-disturbing activities during water infrastructure projects to identify, document, and protect paleontological resources. The successful candidate will ensure strict compliance with federal regulations, conduct field surveys, and contribute to the preservation of significant fossil discoveries. This position requires strong field experience, excellent observational skills, and the ability to work effectively with various project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-construction paleontological surveys and assessments for water infrastructure projects.
  • Monitor active construction sites for the presence of paleontological resources during ground-disturbing activities.
  • Identify, document, and evaluate fossil discoveries in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement appropriate mitigation strategies, including fossil recovery and stabilization, as dictated by project permits and agency guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed field notes, maps, and photographic records of all observations and findings.
  • Prepare daily monitoring logs, progress reports, and contribute to technical paleontological reports.
  • Collaborate with project managers, construction crews, and regulatory agency representatives.
  • Ensure compliance with federal legislation such as the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (PRPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) section 106 related to paleontological resources.
  • Provide guidance and training to construction personnel on paleontological resource awareness and protection protocols.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in paleontological field methods, survey, and excavation techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of regional geology and the identification of Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossil taxa relevant to the American Southwest.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations pertaining to paleontological resource management and protection.
  • Proficiency in using GPS and GIS for accurate data collection and mapping.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Strong observational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Anthropology with a paleontology focus, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience working on projects for the Bureau of Reclamation or other federal agencies.
  • Experience with specific fossil preparation and stabilization techniques in the field.
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour construction safety certification.
