Job Description
We are seeking dedicated and physically active individuals to join the United States Postal Service as a Government Mail Carrier / Postman in Decatur, Illinois. This is an essential role involving significant outdoor work, requiring excellent physical stamina and a commitment to serving the community. As a Mail Carrier, you will be responsible for delivering and collecting mail on a designated route, interacting with the public, and ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of postal items. Key Responsibilities
- Sort and prepare mail for delivery, organizing it in sequence for the assigned route.
- Deliver mail, parcels, and packages to residences and businesses along a prescribed route, either on foot or by vehicle.
- Collect outgoing mail from collection boxes and customers.
- Operate postal vehicles safely and efficiently, adhering to all traffic laws and postal regulations.
- Provide information to the public concerning postal services and regulations.
- Handle mail securely, ensuring privacy and protection of sensitive information.
- Report unusual incidents or obstacles to supervisor.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor with customers and colleagues.
Required Skills
- Ability to lift and carry mail weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Excellent physical condition, capable of extensive walking and standing in various weather conditions.
- Valid state driver's license with a safe driving record (for vehicle routes).
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to read and follow maps and written instructions accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in customer service or a related outdoor work environment.
- Knowledge of the Decatur, Illinois area roads and neighborhoods.
- Ability to learn and adhere to postal regulations and procedures quickly.
