Job Description
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated Plastic Processing Chemist with a strong focus on recycling and ecological solutions to join our R&D team in Burbank, CA. This role is crucial for developing and optimizing processes for the chemical recycling and reprocessing of various plastic materials. You will be responsible for conducting hands-on laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, analyzing polymer properties, and contributing to the scale-up of new recycling technologies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sustainability and a deep understanding of polymer chemistry and processing techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments for the chemical recycling, purification, and reprocessing of post-consumer plastic waste into high-quality feedstocks and new polymers.
- Develop and optimize polymer processing parameters (e.g., extrusion, compounding, injection molding) to enhance material properties and performance of recycled plastics.
- Conduct comprehensive material characterization using techniques such as DSC, TGA, GPC, FTIR, SEM, and mechanical testing to assess the quality and performance of recycled materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, material scientists, and production personnel to transition processes from lab to pilot and commercial scale.
- Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and prepare detailed technical reports and presentations.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in plastic recycling technologies, polymer science, and sustainable materials.
- Ensure all experimental work is conducted safely and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Proactively identify and troubleshoot technical challenges in polymer processing and material development.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of industrial experience.
- Proven experience in polymer synthesis, characterization, and processing (e.g., extrusion, injection molding).
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of various plastic recycling technologies (e.g., depolymerization, pyrolysis, solvent-based purification).
- Proficiency in analytical techniques for polymer characterization (DSC, TGA, GPC, FTIR, NMR, SEM, mechanical testing).
- Experience with process optimization and design of experiments (DOE).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-doctoral experience in a relevant field.
- Experience with pilot-scale operations and process scale-up.
- Knowledge of circular economy principles and life cycle assessment.
- Familiarity with intellectual property development and patent processes.
- Experience with advanced modeling and simulation tools for polymer processing.
Perks & Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.
- 401(k) plan with company matching contributions.
