Job Description

Join the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as a Paleontology Guide, playing a crucial role in our mission of education and preservation. This position is based in a stunning Indiana State Park near Bloomington, where you will engage with visitors of all ages, interpreting the rich paleontological history of our state. You will lead guided tours, develop and deliver educational programs, assist in the monitoring of fossil sites, and contribute to the overall stewardship of our natural heritage. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for paleontology, outdoor education, and conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging interpretive programs and guided tours on paleontology, geology, and natural history for diverse audiences (school groups, general public, special events).
  • Identify, document, and monitor paleontological resources within the state park, ensuring their protection and preservation in accordance with IDNR guidelines.
  • Educate visitors on responsible fossil viewing and collection practices, emphasizing ethical conduct and site integrity.
  • Assist with the maintenance and development of interpretive exhibits, educational materials, and signage related to paleontology.
  • Ensure the safety of program participants during tours and activities, adhering to all park regulations and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with park staff on resource management projects and visitor services as needed.
  • Stay current with paleontological research and best practices in interpretive education.

Required Skills

  • Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills for diverse audiences.
  • Foundational knowledge of paleontology, geology, and natural history, particularly relevant to Indiana's fossil record.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions and over uneven terrain.
  • Basic first aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for educating and engaging the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in interpretive programming, guiding, or teaching in an outdoor or museum setting.
  • Familiarity with Indiana's specific geological formations and fossil types.
  • Experience with exhibit development or educational material creation.
  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid or similar certifications.
