Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Fossil Science Assistant to join our dynamic paleontology department. This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant fossil research, collection management, and educational outreach initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in paleontology, geology, or a related field, coupled with a willingness to learn and apply scientific methodologies in a museum setting. You will work closely with paleontologists and researchers, assisting in various aspects of fossil preparation, curation, data entry, and laboratory maintenance, playing a crucial role in expanding our understanding of prehistoric life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist paleontologists and researchers with fossil preparation, including cleaning, repair, and stabilization of specimens.
  • Perform detailed data entry and database management for fossil collections, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Organize and maintain fossil storage areas, ensuring proper environmental conditions and accessibility.
  • Support field excavation efforts as needed, which may include travel to various sites for fossil recovery.
  • Prepare educational materials and assist with public outreach programs related to fossil science.
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist with basic research tasks under supervision.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Collaborate with other museum departments on interdisciplinary projects and exhibits.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated interest in paleontology, geology, or natural sciences.
  • Basic knowledge of fossil identification and preparation techniques (can be learned on the job).
  • Proficiency in data entry and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds and perform tasks requiring dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Anthropology, or a related scientific field.
  • Previous experience (volunteer or paid) in a museum, laboratory, or field research setting.
  • Familiarity with museum collection management software (e.g., Specify, EMu).
  • Experience with basic laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
  • Valid California Driver's License.
