Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Midwest Paleontology Lab Assistant to join our esteemed research team at Caltech. This essential role supports ongoing paleontological research, focusing primarily on specimens originating from the Midwest region. The successful candidate will play a crucial part in the preparation, organization, and maintenance of fossil collections, ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory activities and contributing directly to scientific discovery within a stable and supportive academic environment. This is an on-site position requiring hands-on work with delicate specimens and laboratory equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, clean, and stabilize fossil specimens using a variety of paleontological tools and techniques.
- Catalog and inventory new and existing fossil collections, maintaining accurate digital and physical records.
- Assist researchers with data collection, analysis, and basic experimental setups related to paleontological studies.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
- Manage and organize specimen storage, including proper labeling and environmental control.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with bibliographic research as needed.
- Perform general administrative tasks to support laboratory operations, such as ordering supplies.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques and safety protocols.
- Experience with fossil preparation and handling.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and databases.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, database entry).
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical dexterity for handling delicate specimens and operating lab equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related scientific field.
- Experience with GIS software or specialized paleontological imaging techniques.
- Familiarity with fossil identification, particularly specimens from North American strata.
- Previous experience working in an academic or museum paleontological laboratory.
- Fieldwork experience in fossil collection.
