Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Paleontology Support professional to join our team in Springfield, IL. This 100% direct hire position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant paleontological research and collection management. The successful candidate will provide essential assistance to our paleontologists, both in the field during excavations and in the laboratory for specimen preparation and curation. This role is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our fossil collections and supporting ongoing scientific investigations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist paleontologists with fieldwork, including excavation, geological mapping, and documentation of fossil localities.
  • Prepare, clean, and conserve fossil specimens using various laboratory techniques and tools, ensuring their long-term preservation.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of fossil specimens, field data, and collection inventories in physical and digital formats.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, including microscopes, air scribes, and other preparation tools.
  • Aid in the organization, cataloging, and storage of fossil collections, ensuring adherence to museum standards and protocols.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for research projects, including ordering supplies and managing equipment.
  • Contribute to public outreach and educational programs, potentially assisting with exhibits or guided tours related to paleontology, as needed.

Required Skills

  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of geological principles and paleontological terminology.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and the ability to learn to operate delicate laboratory instruments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in both laboratory and challenging outdoor field environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds, walk uneven terrain, and work in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Anthropology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in a museum, academic laboratory, or field research setting, particularly in paleontology.
  • Familiarity with database management systems for scientific collections (e.g., Specify, EMu).
  • Knowledge of fossil preparation techniques (e.g., mechanical preparation, stabilization with consolidants).
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR.
