Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Fossil Mold & Cast Specialist to join our Paleontology Department. This is an entry-level position with a strong focus on training, ideal for individuals passionate about paleontology, artistic replication, and scientific preservation. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating high-quality molds and casts of fossil specimens for research, exhibition, and educational purposes. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a commitment to preserving the integrity of invaluable fossil resources. Comprehensive training will be provided in various molding and casting techniques, material science, and best practices in paleontological specimen preparation.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn and apply various molding techniques (e.g., silicone, latex) to create accurate replicas of fossil specimens.
- Master casting techniques using a range of materials, including resins, plaster, and other specialized compounds.
- Prepare fossil specimens for molding, ensuring their safety and stability throughout the process.
- Clean, finish, and assemble casts, performing detailed restoration work as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory workspace, adhering to all safety protocols.
- Document molding and casting processes, including material usage and specimen details.
- Assist senior specialists with complex projects and exhibit preparation.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities.
- Handle delicate and valuable fossil specimens with extreme care and precision.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated strong manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols.
- Basic understanding of scientific concepts or a strong interest in paleontology/geology.
- Proficiency in basic hand tools and measuring instruments.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Commitment to workplace safety and ethical handling of scientific materials.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or coursework in art, sculpture, geology, paleontology, or a related scientific field.
- Prior experience with sculpting, model making, jewelry making, or other craft requiring fine detail work.
- Familiarity with various molding and casting materials.
- Experience working in a laboratory or museum setting.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
