Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Project Lead to join our dynamic research team. This pivotal role involves leading significant paleontological research initiatives, from conceptualization and grant writing to fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and publication. The successful candidate will contribute to our understanding of ancient life and environments, with a particular focus on the rich fossil records of the Gulf Coast. This is an on-site position based in Mobile, Alabama, and relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of paleontological research projects, from project design to completion.
  • Design, plan, and execute fieldwork expeditions for fossil discovery, excavation, and recovery.
  • Oversee the meticulous preparation, analysis, and curation of fossil specimens within our state-of-the-art laboratories.
  • Mentor and supervise junior paleontologists, graduate students, and research assistants.
  • Actively pursue and secure external research funding through compelling grant writing and proposal development.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Represent the university and present research at national and international conferences, as well as to public audiences and stakeholders.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary teams, both internally and with external academic and research partners.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Evolutionary Biology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience (post-Ph.D.) in leading complex paleontological research projects.
  • Expert-level proficiency in fossil identification, systematic analysis, and taphonomic interpretation.
  • Extensive practical experience in paleontological fieldwork, including excavation techniques and site management.
  • A strong record of scientific writing, including peer-reviewed publications and successful grant applications.
  • Exceptional leadership, project management, and team-building skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional postdoctoral research experience.
  • Specialized knowledge or research experience pertaining to the Cenozoic or Cretaceous periods, with an emphasis on Gulf Coast paleontology.
  • Proficiency in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other geological mapping software.
  • A proven track record of acquiring significant research grants from federal or private funding agencies.
  • Experience in science communication, public outreach, and educational program development.
