Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Hospital Pharmacy Technician for a clinical role with a night shift differential. This position is integral to our pharmacy team, supporting pharmacists in providing excellent patient care through accurate medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management, with a specific focus on clinical support functions during the night shift. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced hospital environment, requiring strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently while being a valuable team player. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to patient outcomes in a critical care setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and dispense medications accurately and efficiently, including sterile products and chemotherapy agents, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Assist pharmacists in medication order entry, verification, and resolution of discrepancies.
- Manage pharmacy inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotating medications to ensure optimal supply and minimize waste.
- Perform quality control checks on prepared medications and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Provide support for automated dispensing cabinets, including refilling and troubleshooting issues.
- Participate in medication reconciliation processes and patient education under pharmacist guidance.
- Respond to and prioritize emergent medication requests during night shifts.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Document all relevant activities accurately in patient records and pharmacy systems.
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the pharmacy department.
Required Skills
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification from PTCB or NHA.
- Current Virginia Pharmacy Technician registration or eligibility for immediate registration.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital or acute care setting.
- Proficiency in sterile compounding techniques (USP <797>) and hazardous drug handling (USP <800>).
- Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations and medication nomenclature.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and prioritize tasks.
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with pharmacy information systems.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
- Previous experience in a clinical pharmacy technician role or with night shift duties.
- Demonstrated experience with automated dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell).
