Job Description

The University of California, Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts invites applications for the position of Music Department Chair. This is a significant leadership opportunity for an accomplished academic and visionary leader to guide and advance our esteemed Music program. The Chair will oversee all aspects of the department, including curriculum development, faculty recruitment and mentorship, budget management, and fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment for artistic and scholarly excellence. The ideal candidate will possess a distinguished record in music, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and proven administrative capabilities within a higher education setting. This role demands strategic thinking, effective communication, and a passion for shaping the future of music education and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Department of Music.
  • Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty members, fostering their professional growth.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, and facilities effectively.
  • Represent the department within the university, to external stakeholders, and in professional organizations.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the department and its programs.
  • Facilitate research, creative activities, and performance opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Engage in fundraising and development activities to support departmental initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Doctorate in Music or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, preferably within a university music department.
  • Distinguished record of scholarship, creative activity, and/or performance in music.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and personnel.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with program accreditation (e.g., NASM).
  • Record of successful grant writing and fundraising.
  • Interdisciplinary collaborative experience.
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation within an academic context.
