Job Description
Join the University of Nevada, Reno as a Graduate Paleontology Assistant. This unique role is designed for recent graduates with a passion for paleontology, offering a structured pathway to transition into a professional research or museum position. You will work closely with senior paleontologists and researchers, gaining invaluable experience in field excavation, laboratory analysis, fossil preparation, and data management. Key Responsibilities
- Assist lead paleontologists in planning and executing fieldwork, including fossil excavation, mapping, and site documentation.
- Perform preliminary fossil preparation, cleaning, and conservation in a laboratory setting.
- Assist with the cataloging, identification, and curation of fossil specimens.
- Contribute to data collection, entry, and analysis using relevant software.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with research projects and manuscript preparation.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a safe working environment.
- Participate in outreach and educational activities as required.
- Learn and apply advanced techniques in paleontological research and methodologies.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
- Fundamental understanding of geological principles and stratigraphy.
- Experience with basic laboratory procedures and data handling.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Physical fitness and willingness to work in challenging outdoor field conditions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in paleontological fieldwork or museum collections.
- Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis.
