Job Description
Are you passionate about wildlife and looking to gain hands-on experience with large animals? Blank Park Zoo is offering an exciting Zookeeping & Large Animal Intern position based in Cedar Rapids. This internship provides an unparalleled opportunity to work alongside experienced zookeepers, learning the daily routines, husbandry practices, and behavioral enrichment techniques essential for large animal care. Key Responsibilities
- Assist zookeepers with daily animal husbandry, including cleaning exhibits, preparing diets, and monitoring animal health and behavior.
- Participate in behavioral enrichment activities designed to stimulate animals mentally and physically.
- Observe and document animal behavior, reporting any unusual observations to senior staff.
- Aid in the maintenance of animal habitats, ensuring a safe and clean environment for both animals and staff.
- Learn and adhere to all safety protocols and procedures related to working with large animals.
- Contribute to conservation education efforts as opportunities arise.
- Complete a supervised special project related to zookeeping or animal welfare.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for animals and wildlife conservation.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
- Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Enrollment in or recent graduation from a relevant college degree program (e.g., biology, zoology, animal science, veterinary technology) is preferred but not strictly required for highly motivated candidates.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in an animal care setting (e.g., shelter, farm, vet clinic).
- Basic understanding of animal behavior and welfare principles.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
