Job Description

We are seeking a highly empathetic and skilled Hospice Music Practitioner to join our dedicated hospice team in Davenport, IA. In this compassionate role, you will utilize the power of music to provide comfort, emotional support, and spiritual solace to patients nearing the end of life and their families. Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patients' musical preferences, needs, and goals in coordination with the interdisciplinary hospice team.
  • Develop and implement individualized music sessions tailored to each patient's physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs.
  • Utilize various musical interventions, including live performance (instrumental or vocal), guided imagery with music, songwriting, and music listening, to achieve therapeutic objectives.
  • Provide comfort and distraction from pain, anxiety, and restlessness.
  • Facilitate family presence and interaction through shared musical experiences.
  • Document patient responses, progress, and interventions accurately and timely in electronic health records.
  • Collaborate effectively with nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other team members to integrate music therapy into the overall care plan.
  • Adhere to all ethical and professional standards for music practice in hospice care.
  • Participate in team meetings, in-service training, and continuing education.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional musical proficiency (instrumental and/or vocal) and versatility across various genres.
  • Profound empathy, compassion, and sensitivity towards individuals facing end-of-life challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with patients and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the hospice philosophy and principles of palliative care.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Comfort working in environments with varying levels of emotional intensity.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for home visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Therapy, or a related field with extensive experience in therapeutic music applications.
  • Board Certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience (2+ years) providing music therapy or therapeutic music in a hospice, palliative care, or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of grief and bereavement processes.
  • Experience with diverse musical instruments and cultural music traditions.
