Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Scientific Illustrator specializing in Paleontology to join our dynamic team. This role requires a unique blend of scientific accuracy, artistic talent, and a deep understanding of paleontological subject matter. The ideal candidate will be adept at both traditional (pen and ink, watercolor) and digital illustration techniques to create compelling and scientifically rigorous visuals for exhibitions, research publications, educational materials, and public outreach initiatives. You will work closely with paleontologists, researchers, and exhibition designers to bring the ancient world to life with precision and creativity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce highly accurate and detailed scientific illustrations of fossils, ancient flora, fauna, and paleoenvironments using both digital software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator) and traditional media (e.g., pen and ink, graphite, watercolor).
  • Collaborate closely with paleontologists and researchers to ensure anatomical correctness, taphonomic accuracy, and scientific integrity in all illustrations.
  • Develop reconstruction artwork of extinct organisms and their habitats based on scientific data and current paleontological understanding.
  • Prepare illustrations for a variety of platforms including museum exhibitions, scientific publications, educational programs, and online content.
  • Manage illustration projects from conceptualization through final delivery, adhering to project timelines and specifications.
  • Maintain and organize a digital archive of all illustrative assets and source materials.
  • Stay current with advancements in paleontological research and scientific illustration techniques and software.
  • Assist in the development of visual concepts for new exhibits and educational initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in scientific illustration, with a strong portfolio showcasing paleontological subjects.
  • Proficiency in digital illustration software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Demonstrable skill in traditional illustration techniques (e.g., pen and ink, graphite, watercolor, acrylics).
  • Strong understanding of vertebrate and invertebrate paleontology, anatomy, and geological concepts.
  • Excellent observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret complex scientific data and translate it into clear, accurate, and engaging visual representations.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with scientists and other team members.
  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Scientific Illustration, Paleontology, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Scientific Illustration or a related discipline.
  • Experience working within a museum, research institution, or natural history organization.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software (e.g., ZBrush, Blender) for concepting or final renders.
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles for layout and typography.
  • Experience in photography and image editing of specimens or models.
