Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Music Librarian to join our team. The Music Librarian will be responsible for the comprehensive management of our extensive music collection, supporting the needs of our performing ensembles, guest artists, and educational programs. This vital role ensures that all musical materials are organized, preserved, and readily accessible, contributing directly to the success and artistic integrity of our productions.
Key Responsibilities
- Catalog, classify, and organize all musical scores, parts, and audio/visual recordings according to established library standards.
- Maintain the physical condition of the music collection, including binding, repairing, and reformatting as necessary.
- Manage the acquisition process for new musical materials, including research, ordering, and budget tracking.
- Provide research assistance to conductors, musicians, and artistic staff, locating specific editions or historical performance practices.
- Prepare and distribute performance materials for rehearsals and concerts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Oversee the lending and retrieval of music, tracking usage and managing inventory.
- Implement and manage digital music archiving solutions and electronic resource access.
- Train and supervise interns or volunteers assisting with library tasks.
- Collaborate with artistic and production teams to anticipate music needs for upcoming seasons.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Music, Musicology, Library Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a music library or similar archival setting.
- Proficiency in music cataloging principles and metadata standards (e.g., MARC, RDA, LC Classification).
- Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and various musical genres.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with library management systems and music notation software.
- Ability to read and understand musical scores.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) with a specialization in music librarianship.
- Experience with specific music library software (e.g., OCLC, WorldShare Management Services).
- Proficiency in a foreign language, particularly German, French, or Italian.
- Experience working in a professional performing arts organization.
