Job Description

The Australian Red Cross is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Emergency Management Trainee to join our dynamic Disaster Response team in Melbourne. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to learn the foundational principles and practical applications of emergency management. You will receive comprehensive training and hands-on experience in various aspects of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery operations, working alongside experienced professionals dedicated to humanitarian service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all training modules related to emergency management, disaster response protocols, and first aid.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of emergency relief supplies and materials.
  • Support data collection, record-keeping, and reporting related to emergency incidents and responses.
  • Contribute to community engagement and preparedness activities, including public awareness campaigns and workshops.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to the disaster response team during activations.
  • Engage with affected individuals and communities with empathy and respect, providing initial support and referrals as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and organizational policies during all operational activities.

Required Skills

  • Strong desire to learn and contribute to humanitarian efforts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform tasks in varied environments, including potential lifting of relief supplies.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License.
  • Commitment to the humanitarian principles of the Red Cross.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience, especially in community service or emergency services.
  • Basic First Aid and/or CPR certification.
  • Demonstrated interest in emergency management, community development, or social work.
  • A relevant VET qualification or some university-level studies in a related field.
