Job Description
Are you a passionate gamer with a keen eye for design and a deep understanding of Trading Card Game mechanics? Wizards of the Coast is seeking a motivated and creative TCG Design Intern to join our innovative team in Waterloo. This is an incredible opportunity to learn from industry veterans, contribute to the development of world-class TCGs, and immerse yourself in the art and science of game design. You will assist in various stages of the design process, from ideation and prototyping to playtesting and iteration, helping us craft unforgettable gaming experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior designers in brainstorming new game concepts, mechanics, and card sets for TCGs.
- Develop and refine card designs, including abilities, costs, and flavor text, ensuring balance and thematic consistency.
- Support the creation of prototypes using digital and physical tools for testing new mechanics and systems.
- Actively participate in internal playtesting sessions, providing constructive feedback and observations.
- Analyze playtest data and player feedback to identify design improvements and balance adjustments.
- Collaborate with art, lore, and development teams to ensure cohesive integration of all game elements.
- Document design specifications and game rules clearly and concisely.
- Conduct research on existing TCGs and market trends to inform design decisions.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of TCG game design principles and mechanics.
- Demonstrated creativity and ability to generate innovative ideas.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic office software (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft Office).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Deep passion for and experience playing various Trading Card Games.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Game Design, Interactive Media, or related program.
- A portfolio showcasing personal game design projects, card concepts, or creative writing.
- Experience with digital prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD) or game engines (e.g., Unity).
- Familiarity with the Magic: The Gathering ruleset and design philosophy.
- Experience organizing or participating in TCG community events or tournaments.
