Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable Fossil Acquisition Specialist to focus on identifying, evaluating, and acquiring significant fossil specimens for a curated private collection managed in collaboration with the University. This unique role requires a blend of scientific expertise, market acumen, and exceptional interpersonal skills to navigate the specialized world of private fossil collecting. The successful candidate will be responsible for sourcing rare and scientifically valuable fossils, ensuring their provenance, legality, and ethical acquisition from private collectors worldwide. This position is critical in expanding a collection that supports both scientific research and educational outreach.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct extensive research to identify potential fossil specimens and private collections aligning with acquisition goals.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with private collectors, dealers, and paleontological experts globally.
- Perform thorough due diligence on all potential acquisitions, including scientific evaluation, provenance verification, and legal compliance (e.g., CITES, national heritage laws).
- Negotiate acquisition terms, pricing, and logistics to ensure optimal value and secure ethical transfer of ownership.
- Prepare detailed acquisition proposals, scientific reports, and documentation for each specimen.
- Manage the secure transportation, import/export, and initial cataloging of acquired fossils.
- Stay abreast of paleontological discoveries, market trends, and regulatory changes relevant to fossil acquisition.
- Collaborate with internal scientific teams and external conservators on specimen preservation and preparation.
- Represent the collection and the University at relevant conferences, exhibitions, and specialist gatherings.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontology, geology, natural history collection management, or related fields.
- Demonstrated expertise in fossil identification, appraisal, and scientific evaluation.
- Proven experience in negotiation and acquisition, preferably within high-value or specialized markets.
- Strong understanding of international laws and ethical guidelines pertaining to fossil trade and cultural heritage.
- Exceptional networking and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail for documentation and record-keeping.
- Ability to travel extensively, domestically and internationally, as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Experience working directly with private collectors or high-net-worth individuals.
- Proficiency in multiple languages, particularly those relevant to key fossil-rich regions.
- Familiarity with collection management software and database systems.
- Published research or significant contributions to paleontological knowledge.
