Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Shopping & Mobility Aide to join our social community support team in Stoke-on-Trent. This vital role involves providing direct assistance to customers who require extra help with their shopping and mobility needs within our store and occasionally as part of local community outreach initiatives. You will be a friendly face, ensuring an inclusive and accessible shopping experience for all, particularly those with reduced mobility, sensory impairments, or other specific requirements. Your empathy and practical support will make a tangible difference in the daily lives of our valued customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist customers with mobility challenges navigate the store, including guiding them to specific aisles or items.
  • Provide practical shopping assistance, such as reaching items, reading labels, or helping with packing bags.
  • Operate and maintain mobility aids like electric scooters or wheelchairs for customer use, ensuring they are charged and in good working order.
  • Offer friendly and supportive companionship to customers, engaging in polite conversation while respecting their privacy.
  • Help transport shopping to customer vehicles or designated pick-up points.
  • Identify and report any accessibility barriers within the store environment.
  • Support community outreach programs by assisting with errands or transport for local residents as required by management.
  • Liaise with store staff to ensure a seamless and positive experience for customers requiring additional support.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service, ensuring dignity and respect for all individuals.

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A genuine desire to help others and a compassionate nature.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, lift light items, and push/pull shopping trolleys or wheelchairs.
  • Patience, empathy, and a friendly demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Basic understanding of diverse customer needs, including those related to mobility and sensory impairments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a customer service, caregiving, or retail environment.
  • Knowledge of local community resources in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Experience operating mobility assistance devices.
