Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and adventurous Field Paleontologist to join our dynamic Environmental team. This role involves extensive travel to various project sites across multiple states, conducting paleontological surveys, mitigation, and recovery efforts. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, documenting, and collecting fossils in accordance with scientific protocols and regulatory requirements. This is a hands-on field position, ideal for individuals passionate about paleontology, comfortable with extended travel, and capable of working effectively in diverse outdoor environments. All project-related hotel accommodations will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological field surveys, resource assessments, and mitigation activities across multi-state project areas.
  • Identify, document, and collect vertebrate and invertebrate fossils and associated geological data.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, maps, photographs, and digital data records.
  • Operate field equipment, including GPS, cameras, and excavation tools.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and scientific methodologies during fieldwork.
  • Collaborate with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and permit applications.
  • Maintain and organize field equipment and collected specimens.
  • Travel extensively to project sites, often for weeks at a time, with hotel accommodations paid for by the company.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional paleontological fieldwork experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify fossils and geological formations.
  • Proficiency in field data collection techniques, including mapping and GPS operation.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding fieldwork in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology or related field.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and data management.
  • Knowledge of regional geology and paleontological resources in the Western or Midwestern US.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with various excavation and fossil preparation techniques.
