Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Policy Assistant to join our dynamic team immediately. This role is crucial in supporting our public policy and government relations efforts, requiring a keen interest in policy analysis, research, and communication. The successful candidate will assist in monitoring legislative developments, preparing policy briefs, and coordinating stakeholder engagement activities vital to the Port’s mission and strategic objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual looking to contribute to significant policy work within a major international trade hub.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and analysis on legislative and regulatory developments at local, state, and federal levels impacting port operations and trade.
- Prepare summaries, briefs, presentations, and reports on key policy issues for internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Assist in the coordination and scheduling of meetings with policymakers, legislative staff, and industry stakeholders.
- Support the development and implementation of public policy strategies and advocacy campaigns.
- Track and manage policy-related documents, correspondence, and databases.
- Respond to information requests and assist with various administrative tasks as needed to support the policy team.
- Participate in relevant industry conferences, workshops, and community meetings.
Required Skills
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interest in public policy, government affairs, or international trade.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, International Relations, Economics, or a related field.
- Previous internship or volunteer experience in a policy-related role, government office, or non-profit organization.
- Familiarity with legislative processes and government structures in California or at the federal level.
- Knowledge of the maritime industry, environmental policy, or transportation policy.
