Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS Mapping Specialist with a strong background in Paleontology to join our environmental consulting team. This is a unique opportunity to apply your specialized knowledge in a technical remote role, contributing to critical projects that involve geological surveys, fossil discoveries, and historical site analyses. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, maintaining, and analyzing geospatial data related to paleontological sites, geological formations, and environmental impact assessments. This 100% remote position requires expertise in GIS software, data management, and an understanding of paleontological principles to accurately map and interpret complex scientific data.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain geospatial databases specific to paleontological findings and geological contexts.
- Create detailed GIS maps, charts, and reports illustrating paleontological sites, fossil distributions, and relevant environmental features.
- Perform spatial analysis to identify potential areas of paleontological significance and assess environmental impacts on such sites.
- Integrate data from various sources, including field surveys, archaeological reports, and historical records, into GIS platforms.
- Collaborate with paleontologists, geologists, environmental scientists, and project managers to ensure data accuracy and project alignment.
- Assist in the preparation of regulatory compliance documents and environmental impact statements.
- Ensure data quality and integrity, adhering to established GIS standards and protocols.
- Utilize advanced GIS techniques for data visualization and presentation to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro.
- Strong understanding of geospatial data management and database principles.
- Demonstrable knowledge of paleontology, geology, and stratigraphy.
- Experience with GPS data collection and processing.
- Ability to interpret scientific data and integrate it into GIS workflows.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Geography, GIS, or a related field.
- Experience with remote sensing technologies (e.g., LiDAR, satellite imagery).
- Familiarity with other GIS software (e.g., QGIS) or programming languages (e.g., Python for ArcGIS scripting).
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes.
- Previous experience in an environmental consulting or research setting.
