Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Ancient Life Specialist to join our team, focusing on both educational outreach and the meticulous curation of our paleontological collections. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between scientific research and public engagement, making the fascinating world of ancient life accessible to diverse audiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and developing our fossil collections, creating compelling educational programs for various age groups, and assisting researchers and students with access to specimens and data. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both the preservation of scientific heritage and the inspiration of future generations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain paleontological collections, including accessioning, cataloging, and rehousing specimens according to best practices.
  • Develop, implement, and deliver engaging educational programs, workshops, and tours related to ancient life for K-12 students, university classes, and the general public.
  • Assist faculty, researchers, and students with accessing, studying, and utilizing collection materials for research projects.
  • Ensure proper environmental conditions and security for all collection items, implementing preventative conservation measures.
  • Contribute to the digitization of collection data and images, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records in collection management systems.
  • Collaborate with museum staff, faculty, and community partners to promote the collection and its educational value.
  • Prepare educational materials, exhibits, and online content to interpret ancient life for various audiences.
  • Conduct basic fossil preparation and conservation tasks as needed.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in natural history collection management, specifically with paleontological specimens.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering educational programs for diverse audiences.
  • Strong knowledge of paleontological principles, fossil identification, and evolutionary history.
  • Proficiency with collection management software (e.g., Specify, Arctos) and database entry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts clearly.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology, Museum Studies, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with fossil preparation and basic conservation techniques.
  • Experience in grant writing or securing funding for educational or collection-based projects.
  • Familiarity with California's paleontological record.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the local community.
