Job Description
We are actively seeking a dedicated and reliable Medical Gas Cylinder Porter to join our essential services team at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. This pivotal role involves the safe and efficient movement, storage, and meticulous management of medical gas cylinders across all departments within Derriford Hospital. As a Medical Gas Cylinder Porter, you will play an instrumental part in ensuring that our clinical teams have immediate and uninterrupted access to necessary medical gases, thereby directly contributing to paramount patient care and safety. This is a stable role that mandates a strong, unwavering commitment to rigorous safety protocols and the physical capability to perform demanding tasks within a dynamic and critical healthcare environment. Comprehensive training on all required safety procedures and handling techniques will be provided to the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely transport various medical gas cylinders, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, and medical air, to designated clinical and storage areas throughout the hospital.
- Accurately manage the inventory of medical gas cylinders, ensuring optimal stock levels are maintained and implementing proper rotation practices (first-in, first-out).
- Conduct routine inspections of cylinders for any signs of damage, leaks, or defects and promptly report any issues or anomalies to supervisory staff.
- Maintain all medical gas storage areas to ensure they are consistently clean, organised, secure, and fully compliant with all prevailing health and safety regulations.
- Adhere strictly to all Trust policies and established procedures pertaining to the safe handling, secure storage, and efficient distribution of medical gases.
- Liaise effectively and professionally with clinical staff, nursing teams, and other hospital departments to proactively anticipate and meet their medical gas requirements.
- Complete all necessary documentation, logs, and records accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring full audit trails.
- Participate in regular safety briefings and training refreshers as required by the Trust.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including the safe lifting, pushing, and pulling of heavy medical gas cylinders.
- Exceptional attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards at all times.
- Possess excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues and clinical staff.
- Highly reliable, punctual, and a proactive team player who can work collaboratively as well as independently.
- Fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, essential for accurate inventory management and precise record-keeping.
- A strong willingness and capacity to undergo and successfully complete all essential safety and manual handling training provided by the Trust.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a portering, logistics, warehouse, or similar role, particularly within a hospital or other industrial setting.
- Familiarity with general health and safety regulations, with specific knowledge pertaining to the handling of hazardous materials being advantageous.
- Basic understanding or knowledge of different medical gas cylinder types, their identification, and their specific clinical uses.
- Possession of a valid driving license (desirable, but not essential for this role).
