Job Description

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a dedicated and physically capable Mountain Region Paleo Aide to join our field team. This full-time position will primarily focus on paleontological fieldwork at various dig sites across Colorado and Wyoming. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting lead paleontologists and field supervisors with fossil excavation, site documentation, and equipment management. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about paleontology and eager to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. Extensive travel and fieldwork in demanding outdoor conditions are integral to this role. While our company has offices nationwide, this particular posting is managed from our Hialeah, FL hub, coordinating efforts for projects in the Mountain West.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lead paleontologists and field supervisors with the careful excavation and recovery of fossil specimens.
  • Perform detailed photographic and written documentation of fossil discoveries, stratigraphic profiles, and site features.
  • Maintain field equipment, including tools, supplies, and vehicles, ensuring readiness for daily operations.
  • Screen sediments for microfossils and other small specimens.
  • Participate in site reconnaissance, mapping, and survey activities.
  • Follow all safety protocols and project-specific guidelines rigorously.
  • Assist with the preparation and packaging of specimens for transport to the lab.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment during long field seasons.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or related earth sciences.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, digging, and walking long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively and spend extended periods in remote field camps (CO/WY).
  • Excellent attention to detail and observational skills for precise data recording.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging outdoor conditions, including varying weather and temperatures.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in archaeological or paleontological fieldwork, even as a volunteer.
  • Completion of a field school in paleontology or archaeology.
  • Coursework in geology, paleontology, archaeology, or museum studies.
  • Basic knowledge of GPS units and mapping software.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
