Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Invertebrate Paleontology Assistant to join our research team in a lab-based role. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant paleontological research, primarily focusing on the preparation, curation, and analysis of invertebrate fossil specimens. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in paleontology, excellent organizational skills, and a meticulous approach to laboratory work. This role is crucial for supporting ongoing research projects and maintaining our extensive fossil collection.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare fossil specimens for study using various mechanical and chemical techniques, including cleaning, repair, and stabilization.
- Catalog and curate invertebrate fossil collections, ensuring accurate data entry into institutional databases.
- Assist with basic identification and taxonomic classification of invertebrate fossils under supervision.
- Perform routine laboratory maintenance, including equipment calibration, inventory management, and ensuring a clean and organized workspace.
- Support research projects by preparing slides, conducting basic microscopy, and collecting data.
- Digitize and photograph specimens for research and public outreach purposes.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and ethical guidelines for specimen handling.
Required Skills
- Strong manual dexterity and fine motor skills for delicate specimen handling.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Basic knowledge of geological principles and paleontology, particularly invertebrate fossils.
- Proficiency in data entry and experience with database management systems.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a natural history museum, academic research lab, or similar paleontological setting.
- Familiarity with geological mapping and stratigraphic principles.
- Experience with image processing software for scientific documentation.
- Knowledge of Florida's fossil record and Cenozoic stratigraphy.
